Can do

How does the "can do" attitude show up in your organization - a poster, a slogan?

Over the weekend, our family went on an outing to the local Apple Store where my eldest made a purchase.  Visiting there is always a pleasant experience, but what caught my eye this time was how the retail clerk completed our transaction.  She used an iPhone or iPod Touch modified, with Apple developed proprietary software to scan the items, swipe my credit card, record my signature and (if I wanted) email me the receipt.  Hand held devices have done retail check stand transactions before.  Apple could have used any one of such solutions.  They didn't.  They made their own solution because they believed they could.  Apple staff demonstrates their "can do" attitude by using their own product in the retail transactions.  Wow.

Our HR team here at TiVo showed its "can do" attitude in a different way, by running recruitment advertisement on selected DVRs in 2007.  It had never been done before.  Offering recruitment advertisement on television wasn't part TiVo's business focus.  We could easily run advertisement in newspapers, periodicals and TV - why not utilize our own product/service?  We saw a great response from viewers and just ran a simpler version during the 2010 holidays in California.  We also made our own solution.

How can your company use its own product, tool, or service in interacting with customers and potential applicants in new ways?  "It hasn't been done before", your peers say.   So what?  It might require pushing the envelope.  It probably will.  Your peers inside and outside of recruiting will learn a lot and pick up some pride along the way.  Prospective applicants, customers and people that refer admire companies that have a "can do" attitude.
